The Carolyn E. Fugett Intergenerational Center, designed by NFD in collaboration with KPN Architects, reimagines a former educational landmark as a vibrant, community-centered hub in West Baltimore. Located on the site of a former elementary school, the project transformed a 55,000-square-foot, three-story brick structure into a dynamic environment for lifelong learning, support, and connection. The program integrates a wide range of services and amenities, including Early Head Start for pregnant women and families with children under three, and Head Start for children ages three to five. A dedicated early learning center features nine classrooms and additional meeting spaces. The facility also includes a community kitchen for meals, a food pantry for grocery distribution, and flexible gathering spaces for local organizations. Health and wellness were central to the project, with a community health clinic, behavioral health and substance abuse services, and spaces for workforce development and youth programming. A renovated indoor gym was just one of many recreational amenities provided. Working closely with the client and project team, NFD led a thoughtful design process that balanced creativity with budget constraints. Strategic material selections and careful detailing shaped key experiential moments, including a vibrant, color-driven work lounge and pantry, along with signature curvilinear reception desks anchoring the community center, coworking areas, and Head Start lobbies. These elements reinforce a sense of identity, warmth, and approachability throughout the building, ensuring that design quality and user experience remain uncompromised. NFD provided As-built Documentation, Space Planning, Design Development, Furniture Consultation, Construction Documentation, Permitting, Signage/Wayfinding, and Construction Administration services.
